Ajari Mochi by Ajari Mochi Hompo Mangetsu

A traditional Kyoto confection from the long-established shop Mangetsu, featuring a moist and chewy dough filled with elegantly sweet red bean paste.

Last update :

Ajari Mochi, a beloved Kyoto confection, was created by the second-generation owner of the long-established Mangetsu shop and released in 1922 (Taisho 11).

Made with rice flour, eggs, and sugar, the mochi mimics the shape of the traditional straw hats worn by high-ranking monks (Ajari) during their training at Mt. Hiei. The secret dough encases a generous filling of sweetened Tanba Dainagon red bean paste.
The moist and chewy texture of the dough perfectly complements the light sweetness of the homemade red bean paste, creating a flavor that has been cherished for generations. While delicious on its own, heating the mochi in a microwave for 20-30 seconds restores its freshly made softness. If the dough becomes firm over time, lightly toasting it in an oven or on a frying pan will bring out a crispy and aromatic texture.

Ajari Mochi is available at the main store and the Kinkakuji store, as well as in major department stores in Kyoto City and at shops inside and around Kyoto Station, making it a convenient souvenir. Despite its high-quality taste, it remains affordably priced.
