Hirokawadera Temple

This historic temple sits just at the foot of Mount Katsuragi with origins that tell of its founding by ascetic monk En no Gyōja in the fourth year of Emperor Tenji's reign (665). It became an imperial temple under Emperor Tenmu, and during the Heian period, Emperor Saga ordered Kūkai to renovate the temple complex, reestablishing it as a sacred site for esoteric Buddhism.

The renowned poet and monk Saigyo Hoshi, celebrated for having 94 of his poems included in the Shin Kokin Wakashū, visited the temple in the late Heian period and spent his final days there. Within the temple grounds, there is a hall dedicated to Saigyo, containing his statue and his grave. The Saigyo Memorial Museum (admission fee applies) located at the back of the main hall is where you’ll find temple treasures, paintings, and writings related to Saigyo.

Many savvy travelers know this spot for its immense nature, including the majestic mountain at its back and for its famed cherry blossoms. If your next trip is in the spring between late March and early April, expect the jaw-dropping view of 1,500 cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino and Yamazakura in all their splendor. The temple grounds also feature a weeping cherry tree with deep pink blossoms that adds to the vibrant scenery. After the cherry blossom season, visitors can enjoy the blooms of the 350-year-old rose family plant, "Kaido," which is a natural monument in the temple's main garden (admission fee applies).
