Omaki Onsen: A Hidden Hot Spring Inn Accessible Only by Boat
Perched on a cliff within a serene gorge, this secluded hot spring inn can only be reached by sightseeing boat, offering a truly unique and tranquil escape.
Legend has it that this secluded hot spring inn once served as a refuge for fallen Heike warriors fleeing the Genji clan, where they found solace and healed their wounds. Nestled on a sheer cliff along the emerald-green Sho River, the only way to reach the inn is via the Sho River Gorge Sightseeing Boat, which operates 3–4 times a day. Its unique charm has drawn international guests seeking an unforgettable escape.
The inn offers a variety of open-air bathing experiences, including a rustic open-air bath, a spacious indoor bath, and a terrace bath (for men), located near the water’s surface. These baths provide unparalleled views of the lush gorge and the natural hot spring water sourced from the Sho River.
For accommodations, river-facing rooms range from traditional Japanese-style rooms to spacious Japanese-Western hybrid rooms and special rooms with private open-air baths. For guests prioritizing value over views, reasonably priced mountain-side rooms are also available.
Dinner is a highlight, featuring kaiseki cuisine crafted from Toyama’s finest ingredients, such as fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, seasonal vegetables, and Koshihikari rice. Guests can choose from three meal grades, accompanied by a rich selection of local sake and wines.
